It's been a cold long January. We are sorry we haven't posted in a while. Here are some fun pictures from our activities in late December and early January. Stay warm!

Check out our new literacy partners!

At the end of each Reading and Writing workshop we have partner time.  This is a time when we share our favorite part of a book we read, ask for help with tricky words or act out a really funny part together.  In writing, we will turn to our partners to ask for their help in sounding out words, adding details to our words or pictures or just to act as a sounding board for our ideas.  These are some pictures of us after we chose a cozy spot to work together.

Fall Harvest

Our class went out to the garden to examine what was still left of the fall harvest.  Sam's mom, Laura, led the class in showing what the first grade classes had planted last year and what we could harvest for the PS 154 Harvest next week.  We saw that some kale, carrots, brussel sprouts and grape tomatoes were still growing.  All the students helped to harvest some carrots to give to Miss Jen in the cafeteria.  We can't wait to taste our home grown vegetables!

Chess

Chess just started and the kids are enjoying learning new strategies and practicing the ones they learned last year in kindergarten.  Here are a few pictures of some intense games from this past class.

Welcome back!

We've had a wonderful start to our year.  We've spent time getting to know each other and getting familiar with our classroom routines.  We begin each morning doing some fine motor activities after we have unpacked our bags.

Earth Day Art

We read about Earth Day and discussed all the different ways that we can help take care of the Earth.  Then we created some Earth Day art and got quite messy.  Here are some pictures that we took before we washed our hands.

Caring for our garden plot

Harrison's mum Tiffany took our class out to the garden to observe our recently planted carrot seeds.  She also brought some compost for us to mix in with the soil.  We had fun examining the plot and even found a few worms!
