It's been a cold long January. We are sorry we haven't posted in a while. Here are some fun pictures from our activities in late December and early January. Stay warm!

The Big Apple Crunch!

Our kids, along with all the other kids throughout the city, crunched on an apple at the same time.  How loud do you think the crunch was?  Watch the video to find out.

Caring School Community Kick Off Parade

As part of our Social Studies curriculum, PS 154 instituted a school-wide initiative several years ago called the Caring School Community program.  This program focuses on opening communication about many different social topics such as kindness to classmates, exclusion on the playground and bullying.  We also will be discussing topics that involve philanthropy (Penny Harvest), environmental issues (Earth Day) and cultural diversity.
Last week we met with our buddy class, class 5-306, for the first time.  We will be participating in many projects together.  Our first meeting involved kicking off the Caring School Community parade.  Each class was asked to create a banner highlighting one of the several social commitments to our school.  Our classes were assigned "We promise to take care of our school and everything in it."

Decker Farms

We kicked off our new Social Studies unit of study: Families - Then and Now with a trip to Decker Farms.  We were able to explore a real working farm to see how families lived and worked over 100 years ago.  We compared the differences in the conveniences of today's technologies with the hand made tools of yesterday.  We completed our trip by picking a pumpkin from the pumpkin patch and then taking a hayride around the property.

Watching Farmer Harry demonstrate how farm tools were used.

Ling and Selina's first hayride!

Chess has started!

Chess has started and the kids are so excited to learn new strategies from our instructor Manuel.  We have Chess every Thursday during 2nd period so be sure to play a game over the weekend to give the kids a chance to practice.

How was school today?

Have you ever asked your child, "What did you do in school today?" and get a response such as, "Nothing".  We know this can be frustrating.

Well, our current units of study will now be posted on the right.  We hope that this will help get some good discussions started during dinner, breakfast or your walk to or from school.

Reading Workshop

Here are a few peeks into our reading workshop time.  We read independently from our "just right books" and then spend a few minutes sharing our books with our partners.

Apples!

We used apples in our math lessons by charting and sorting the different types of apples we brought to school by color, size and then type.

Then we read 10 Apples on Top and created math
                                 addition problems with apples.

Finally, we used the apples to make homemade
applesauce with our families on Family Friday!
                                    Our room smelled so good!
